 History

"Gaurimarg" is the old name of Gulmarg, It is the name of Lord History of Gulmarg Shiva's wife. Yousuf Shah Chak changed its name to Gulmarg, meaning the place of roses. Gulmarg has been a resort for the kings like Yousuf Shah Chak and Jahangir who used to visit frequently. During the early part of the 20th century the famous Central Asian explorer Sir Marc Aurel Stein (1862–1943), made his home here in a tent between his expeditions. It was a favourite summer holiday destination for the British stationed in India. The surrounding areas were politically restive during the 1990s uprising in Kashmir, but since a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in 2003, the town has enjoyed a period of relative peace and quiet. The town is nestled within the imposing Himalayan peaks, and lies within miles of the Line of Control. It receives heavy snowfall during the winter season and is a popular ski resort.

Gulmarg has quickly become one of the state's most visited destinations with the abatement of militancy in the area. In Asia the slopes of the Afarwat Hills of the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalaya Chain boast one of the longest and highest ski slopes. The total distance covered by Ski lifts covered total distance is five kilometres and the resort peaks at an altitude of 3,950 m (12,959 ft), accessed by an aerial gondola (telecabine). The skiing project was inaugurated by the Chief Minister on 25 December 2004. The entire hill is guarded by the army at all times. The army, which is seen everywhere in the cities of Kashmir, is not in the town or the actual hilltop. Frisking is only done midway on the access road at 3 places: Tangmarg, near an army camp on the road from Tangmarg, and 5 km before entering Gulmarg. Gulmarg does not have any permanent residents. All living in Gulmarg are hotel employees and guests. Everyone else is required to leave the village by sunset, due to a curfew imposed by the army in 1990.

 Culture

Gulmarg evokes an image of a mythical place: The head of the valley at the end of the road, and the top of the mountain. An ancient culture still resides on both sides of an imaginary line where two countries have battled over this land; for over 150 years this line, this vale, this identity has been disputed in one of the Earth`s most beautiful arenas.

Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve lies to the southwest of Srinagar, at a distance of 48 km. A number of rare and exotic species like the musk deer have found their home in this Biosphere reserve. The main attractions of the Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve of Kashmir is the flora and fauna. Dominating in the rich green cover of the area are the conifers, accounting for over ninety percent of the vegetation. Aesculus indica, Pinus griffithii, Cedrus deodara, Abies pindrow, etc consist of the major species. Embracing the ground of the Kashmir, India Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve is a shrub, consisting of Sorbaria tomentosa, Viburnum spp., Indigofera heterantha, etc., along with the Dicotyledonus herbs. Otherwise rest of the culture is same as Kashmiris and Dogris.

 Festival

In Gulmarg from February 2, the 2-day food and snow festival is starting. Different for this year, the festival will be held near the base station of world's highest Gondola, in tented accommodations, so that skiers can participate as soon as their last run off the mountain concludes.
This 2-Day festival will include night skiing, snowboarding, ice-skiing, snow-cycling and international food festival. In Europe and North America, its widely believed that the quality of snow and the slopes at Phase 2 surpasses.

The festival will give an opportunity to savour traditional Kashmiri cuisine like Wazwaan, Harissa, Masala, fish and Kashmiri snacks. Some Italian and Russian dishes, sponsored by tour operators from other countries. According to Carin Jodha Fischer, tourism consultant to J&K Tourism Department this year, compared to the last two years, everything at Gulmarg has improved in terms of infrastructure. Apparently the tarrif for the Gandola ride has been reduced, its been running on time and snow removal has been better. Advance bookings for accomodations are always better, especially to guard against unexpected arrival of domestic tourists.
Jammu and Kashmir Cycling Association is expected to organize snow cycling event on the first day of the 2-day festival.
